Intertek attains accreditation for AS9110 standard

December 18th, 2009

14 October 2009 - Boxborough, MA, USA - Intertek, a leading global provider of quality and safety solutions, is pleased to announce that as of 9 October 2009, it is accredited by the ANSI-ASQ National Accreditation Board (ANAB) to offer certification to the AS9110 standard.  With this accreditation, Intertek becomes part of an elite group of registrars qualified to offer ANAB-accredited certification to the full AS9100 Series of standards: AS9100, AS9003, AS9110, and AS9120.

AS9110 is based on ISO 9001 and defines additional quality management system (QMS) requirements for aerospace maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) organizations.  An MRO that is in compliance with the AS9110 standard demonstrates that it can meet the requirements of its customers and any applicable regulatory bodies through the documented implementation of a QMS that specifically addresses the needs of the industry. AS9110-certified MROs can gain benefits including a reduction in industry audits and the ability to accept contracts from customers that flow down AS9110 as a requirement.  Aerospace OEMs, such as Boeing, increasingly require MROs to be AS9110 certified by a third-party registrar like Intertek.

“As one of the top aerospace registrars in the world, Intertek is committed to developing its auditing program to meet the continually evolving needs of the aerospace industry,” said Calin Moldovean, president of Intertek’s systems certification group.  “The unparalleled technical expertise of our auditors, coupled with our close involvement in the International Aerospace Quality Group [IAQG], gives us the insight and experience needed to complete certification projects quickly and cost-effectively.”

SGS proudly announces being the first, and currently, the only registration body to be accredited to both RIOS and R2 by ANAB

November 25th, 2009

SGS is pleased to be the first registrar in the world that has been accredited to The Recycling Industry Operating Standard (RIOS) and The Responsible Recycling© Standard (R2) by ANSI-ASQ National Accreditation Board (ANAB). SGS is proud to endorse a certification service for the recycling industry and continue to offer exceptional and innovative services to our current and future clients. “By being the first registrar to achieve either RIOS and R2 certification, SGS has again demonstrated our leadership and commitment to sustainable and responsible business practices,” said Steve Chippas, Senior Vice President of SGS Systems and Services Certification.

What Exactly is RIOS and R2

The Recycling Industry Operating Standard (RIOS) is the scrap recycling industry’s standard for integrated quality, environmental, and health & safety (QEH&S) management systems. RIOS has been developed by the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries, Inc. (ISRI) to provide a framework for effectively managing and controlling recycling operations and achieving measurable continual improvement in QEHS performance. ANSI-ASQ National Accreditation Board (ANAB) offers third party certification to the RIOS standard.

R2 is a set of voluntary operational practices specific to electronic recyclers (e-recyclers) and their management of environmental, worker health and safety, and security issues. E-recyclers, who certify to R2 Practices in addition to RIOS, will highlight their performance in the handling of used equipment and end-of-life materials, and information security.

It Was All About Teamwork

Many SGS employees contributed to the successful implementation of the RIOS and R2 standard.  Investing abundant time and sweat, the SGS Systems & Services Certification team worked diligently together to make sure we continue to effectively serve the ever growing recycling industry. Steve Chippas recalls, “working closely with the leaders in the recycling industry, SGS was pleased to provide our input and expertise as both the RIOS and R2 standards were created and put into the market.”

Why SGS?

SGS is the world’s leading certification body for management systems. We conduct management system audits including RIOS, R2, ISO 14001, ISO 9001 and OHSAS 18001 for the recycling industry. Our auditors are certified to RIOS and R2 and cross-trained to other QEH&S management systems so that we can be cost effective. For electronics, we currently verify electronic scrap programs internationally including the Canadian Electronic Stewardship Program, the EU Member States’ WEEE Directive, and Germany’s ElektroG certification.  Based on SGS’s unique audit approach and industry expertise we not only verify the effectiveness of your system but help you realize improvements in your QEHS performance. Your organization will benefit from the insight of our auditors in the management of EH&S risks and product quality.

ANSI Accredits First Five Certification Bodies under Toy Safety Certification Program

October 14th, 2009

New York, October 14, 2009:  The American National Standards Institute (ANSI), coordinator of the U.S. standards and conformity assessment system, is pleased to announce the first five certification bodies to be accredited under the new Toy Industry Association (TIA) Toy Safety Certification Program®. The TSCP was created to improve toy safety, enhance stakeholder confidence in toy products, and comply with new federal legislation mandating that toys be tested by a qualified lab and certified that they meet rigorous national safety standards and regulations, as well as retailer requirements.ANSI accreditations under the TSCP have been granted to:

  • Bureau Veritas Consumer Products Services
  • Intertek Testing Services Hong Kong Ltd.
  • NSF International
  • SGS North America Inc.
  • STR-Registrar, LLC

These certification bodies were assessed based on the requirements in the International Standard ISO/IEC Guide 65, General Requirements for Bodies Operating Product Certification Systems, the associated International Accreditation Forum (IAF) Guidance Document, and program requirements for the TSCP.

ISO/IEC Guide 65 – the cornerstone of ANSI’s product certification accreditation process – is a globally recognized guideline that will facilitate the recognition of TSCP certifications across national borders. And since ANSI’s accreditation programs are driven by a process of continual quality improvement, certification bodies accredited under the TSCP will be subjected to periodic assessment and on-site evaluations to verify their continued conformance to program criteria.

“ANSI is pleased to announce these new accreditations for Bureau Veritas Consumer Products Services, Intertek Testing Services Hong Kong, NSF International, SGS North America, and STR-Registrar, which recognize their fulfillment of the ANSI and TSCP requirements for competence of product certification bodies,” said Lane Hallenbeck, vice president for accreditation services at ANSI. “Keeping children safe is a top priority for ANSI and TIA, as well as for parents nationwide. Through the TSCP effort, we can assure integrity and consistency in toy safety certification, helping to boost consumer confidence that the toys on store shelves are safe.”

Development of the TSCP began in August 2007 when TIA engaged ANSI to coordinate a public-private partnership to develop conformity assessment guidance regarding toy safety. The resulting program has included and will continue to integrate input from U.S. government bodies, consumer groups, toy companies, retailers, toy testing labs, and factory auditing companies as well as officials and industry representatives from China and the European Union.

The program builds on the requirements of the new Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) and goes even further to help assure the safety of toys entering the U.S. marketplace.

Under the terms of a Memorandum of Understanding signed in September 2008, ANSI was named as the official third-party accreditor of TSCP’s product certification bodies.

“Today’s announcement is another significant milestone in the launch of the Toy Safety Certification Program,” said Elizabeth Borrelli, TSCP executive director. “The ANSI-TIA partnership has been instrumental in the development of a transparent, effective, and credible system that will help to identify and remedy potential problems throughout the toy supply chain – from product design to playtime.”

ANSI administers more than 30 distinct product accreditation program scopes — ranging from appliances and bottled water to plumbing products and fresh produce. Via the Institute’s involvement in several international and regional agreements, many ANSI-accredited certification programs are recognized as equally reliable to commensurate programs around the world.

ANSI is now accepting applications for further accreditations under the TSCP.

Additional information about the Toy Safety Certification Program® can be found at www.toycertification.org. Information about the ANSI accreditation process can be found online at www.ansi.org/tscp. To learn more about the requirements or to obtain an application, please contact Reinaldo Figueiredo, ANSI senior program director (rfigueir@ansi.org; 202.331.3611), or Nikki Jackson, ANSI program manager (njackson@ansi.org; 202.331.3623).

ISO shines new light on sun protection methods

September 30th, 2009

ISO/TR 26369:2009, Cosmetics – Sun protection test methods – Review and evaluation of methods to assess the photo protection of sun protection products, will contribute to both regulatory and private sector objectives, benefitting public authorities, industry and consumer associations .

The new ISO report reviews and evaluates the methods used to measure the level of protection of sun protection products, including tables of their key parameters and elements. It applies to the sun protection factor (SPF) of a sunscreen and the ultraviolet A (UVA) protection. Both in vivo and in vitro methods are included.

“Assessing the efficacy of sunscreen products is recognized as an important public health issue,” says Prof. Philippe Masson, Convener of the working group that developed the report. “Until now the plethora of methods used to determine the level of protection provided by sun protection products has made comparisons both difficult and time-consuming. Thanks to ISO/TR 26369:2009, users are now able to compare methods quickly and easily, from just one document.”

ISO/TR 26369:2009 will serve as a technical/scientific framework in order to help identify the most suitable methods for standardization. It will be part of a series of standards which will address sun protection test methods.

ISO/TR 26369:2009, was developed by ISO technical committee ISO/TC 217, Cosmetics, and is available from ISO national member institutes (see the complete list with contact details). It may also be obtained directly from the ISO Central Secretariat, price 136 Swiss francs, through the ISO Store or by contacting the Marketing & Communication department.

ISO Consumer Directory Goes Online

August 25th, 2009

ISO has launched an online directory giving a cross-section of consumers’ involvement in its work.

The new directory provides enhanced, easily updatable information on the state of consumer participation in standards setting, particularly in the priority areas identified by the ISO Committee on consumer policy (ISO/COPOLCO).

Data supplied by ISO members is automatically integrated into the online directory, providing real-time information on consumer participation organized by priority area or by country. A query page allows users to generate listings of standards or standards under development within each priority area.

“The ISO Directory of consumer interest participation underpins one of our ongoing objectives: to promote the involvement of stakeholders in ISO’s activity,” says Rob Steele, ISO Secretary-General. “Thanks to this useful resource, we now have available a transparent and objective overview of consumer participation in standardization. With multiple applications, the Directory will provide users with concrete examples of the importance of involving stakeholders effectively in standardization. This is true for both the market relevance of the standards and the benefits to the end-user.”

For each country listed in the directory, users can find:

  • The contact person for consumer matters
  • Types of consumer participation in policy and/or governance committees
  • Support that the ISO member provides for consumer interest involvement
  • Publicly available resources for consumer stakeholders

For specific priority areas, users can find:

  • Consumer representation on international committees of ISO or the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC)
  • National committees or mirror committees
  • Other related initiatives

The directory is a valuable tool for COPOLCO members, consumer representatives, researchers, and interested members of the general public who wish to gain insight into the structures and processes of consumer participation within ISO. It replaces a paper-based COPOLCO directory that listed structures for consumer participation within each country.

The new ISO Directory is available on ISO Online under “Consumers“, or directly at: www.iso.org/isoconsumerdirectory.  See the original post of this press article at: http://www.iso.org/iso/pressrelease.htm?refid=Ref1240
